This video illustrates different steps of activation of a percutaneous heart
valve (FORMAVALVE™) when placed inside a heart chamber. The frame of the valve
is made of shape-memory Nitinol which will be transformed from its early helical
structure to its final circular shape upon exposure to body temperature. This
phase transformation would result in formation of a heart valve that can be
implanted within a dysfunctional valve with minimally invasive procedures
without the need for open-heart surgery. The technology represented in the
video is the work of Dr. Arash Kheradvar, an Assistant Professor at the
University of South Carolina.
