5th Annual Workshop on Basic Confocal Microscopy
June 15-19, 2009, Columbia, South Carolina
The South Carolina EPSCoR/IDeA Program and the USC School of Medicine
Instrumentation Resource Facility are pleased to announce the 5th Annual
Workshop on Basic Confocal Microscopy. The hands-on workshop will target
beginning and intermediate users of confocal microscopes and will provide
lectures from experts in the field of confocal microscopy and the use of Adobe
Photoshop and 3-D software for processing confocal images. Lecture material will
provide information on the basics of fluorescence and fluorescent probes,
biological specimen preparation (fixation, staining, optical properties and
mounting materials), strategies and protocols for selection of antibody
labeling, the basic components of a confocal microscope (lasers, dichroic
mirrors, microscope objectives, photomultiplier tubes, etc.) and an overview of
some applications of confocal microscopy.
During the laboratory portion of the workshop, specimens will be processed for
double and triple labeling, and proper selection of user adjustable parameters
to optimize image collection will be addressed and demonstrated. Participants
are welcome to process their own samples or to use samples that will be
provided. Several point scanning and spinning disk confocal systems from various
manufacturers will be available for use so participants will have ample time for
hands on use of the instruments during the workshop. Tuition for
participants from South Carolina colleges and universities is $100, the
remainder will be covered through the SC IDeA/INBRE program.
Preregistration is required.
Information can be found in the brochure here

Bioinformatics Core Research Experience for Undergraduates 2009
The SC INBRE Bioinformatics Core is pleased to announce a Research
Experience for Undergraduates (REU). This program is aimed at
undergraduate students attending colleges and universities in South
Carolina. It offers opportunities for educational advancement with hands
on laboratory training in the field of bioinformatics. REU students will
participate in a 10-week program during the summer of 2009. Students will
be assigned to a mentor and together will develop a research project that
must involve application of informatics, statistics and/or computer
science to biological problems. In addition to working on their own
research projects, students will take part in a lecture series and several
educational and enrichment activities. At the end of the 10 weeks, the
students will submit a report of their project and also take part in the
SURP symposium, where they will present their findings. Recruitment and
selection of students for the REU will be coordinated with the MUSC
College of Graduate Studies in association with the Summer Undergraduate
Research Program (SURP). Application for the positions can be made online
using SURP web application forms at
http://www.musc.edu/grad/summer/surp/.
SC INBRE Microarray Pilot Studies Award
Winners Announced
The SC INBRE Biotechnology Core announced an opportunity to fund pilot
gene expression studies employing DNA microarray technology. Undergraduate
and graduate students belonging to SC INBRE participating institutions were eligible to apply for an award up to $8,000. Each award
provided funds and resources for performing microarray hybridizations using RNA
samples provided to the core by the applicant. This award is only used to
offset costs of microarrays, kits and services performed at the SC INBRE
Biotechnology core facilities located at MUSC and USC; no funds are given
directly to the applicant.
Applications were limited to 5 pages and were to include the following: Project title, Student name (academic level), Mentor Name (appended with Mentor's biographical sketch and letter of support), Institutional Affiliation, Abstract, Specific Aims, Background and Significance, Expected Results and References. A plan for data analysis was also to be included (applicants were able to avail themselves of microarray analysis services available through the SC INBRE Biotechnology Core).
The deadline for application submission was November 1, 2007. Decisions were made in December 2007 allowing projects to be commenced in January 2008. For additional information regarding this opportunity and similar future opportunities please contact: Dr. W. Scott Argraves, Director of the Biotechnology Core.

Application Materials and Draft Agenda
**The Deadline for Pre-Proposal Submission has Passed**
The South Carolina EPSCoR/IDeA State Committee will be submitting a single, $1 million proposal for the state in response to the NSF EPSCoR RII C2 solicitation (NSF 09-569). This program is designed to develop, deploy and improve the broadband connectivity to foster collaboration, prompt innovation, broaden individual and institutional participation, strengthen e-learning, create jobs, develop the workforce, contribute to the economic development of jurisdictions, and help to facilitate participation in the computing based intellectual future. RII C2 provides a unique opportunity for jurisdictions to address such issues and to provide community colleges and minority serving institutions with advanced connections to research and research-based education that will accelerate learning, discovery, and economic development in rural and underserved communities.
The South Carolina EPSCoR/IDeA State Committee invites pre-proposals from all institutions of higher education in South Carolina. This solicitation offers two separate opportunities: 1) a pre-proposal from a single institution may request up to a total of $250,000 (direct plus indirect costs); or 2) a collaborative pre-proposal (two or more institutions) may request up to a total of $750,000. Each institution is eligible to participate in only one (1) pre-proposal. The period of performance may be between twelve (12) and twenty-four (24) months.
Awards made in response the RII C2 program will be funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA). As such, awards will include special reporting requirements and other non-standard terms and conditions. Unless otherwise specified, ARRA funding should be considered one-time funding.
